OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Harlem Dezir, has spoken about the cases of discrimination directed against journalists of the Sputnik information agency, which demanded his intervention. He included them in the report on the work of his department at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, RIA Novosti reports.

He expressly indicated the case in Canada, where journalists from the Russian media were not allowed into the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Lima Group.

He also had to express concern over the situation with the editor-in-chief of Sputnik Lithuania, Marat Kasem. As Russkiy Mir reported earlier, at the end of May representatives of Lithuanian law enforcement agencies detained the chief editor of Sputnik Lithuania, Marat Kasem, who arrived at Vilnius airport. It was announced that he allegedly posed a “threat to national security,” and was banned from entering the Lithuanian territory for five years. He was put on a return flight and expelled from Vilnius.

According to Dezir, last month the Russian authorities addressed him with a message about the appeals of the deputies of the Lithuanian Seimas (the Parliament) to block access to the Sputnik Lithuania website. Desir replied that he was closely following the situation in this case.

These are not all cases of discrimination against Sputnik journalists that have occurred in the world during this period. The report covers the period from November 22, 2018 to July 4, 2019.
