The names of the laureates of the Benois de la Danse award, which is considered to be the equivalent of the Oscars for ballet dancers, have been announced in Moscow. The solemn ceremony was held on the historical stage of the Bolshoi Theater, TASS reports. The award has been given out for almost three decades.
The award was received by the laureates in six nominations. They represent the largest ballet companies from around the world.
John McFarlane was recognized as the best theatre designer. He was noted for his work with Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake in Covent Garden, London. The award was handed to him by Vadim Muntagirov, a dancer who also performed in the British capital. He was recognized as the best for playing the role of a prince in the same ballet.
In the female nomination two ballet dancers became the best. The jury named Ashley Bouder from New York, who danced the main part in Coppelia, staged in New York City Ballet. The second award was given to Elisa Carrillo Cabrera from the Berlin State Ballet for the leading role in Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev.
The jury chose two winners among the choreographers. The prize was awarded to Fredrik "Benke" Rydman, who staged Duet with an Industrial Robot at the city theater in Stockholm, and Christian Shpuk for Winter Road in Ballett Zürich
The jury is traditionally led by the great choreographer Yuri Grigorovich. He has occupied this position since the founding of the Benois de la Danse. This time he watched the ceremony remotely.

Prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theater Svetlana Zakharova, who is the co-chair of the jury, noted that the prize was a clear indication of the lack of boundaries in the dance.
The Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián won in the most honorable nomination For the Life in Art.
Anna Lauder, prima ballerina of the Hamburg ballet, was marked by the joint Russian-Italian ballet prize Benois Myasin.
