Monument to the Soviet Officer Alexander Pechersky who headed the uprising in Sobibor death camp has appeared in Rostov-on-Don. It was installed next to the Gymnasium named also after Pechersky. The officer spent there his childhood and lived there after the war, TASS informs.

Ceremony of unveiling the monument took place on April 24. It was timed with world premiere of Sobibor film. Director and actor playing Pechersky Konstantin Khabensky, relatives of the hero, the head of the Alexander Pechersky Foundation Ilya Vasiliev and Governor of Rostov region Vasiliy Golubev participated in the ceremony.

Khabensky comments that he is happy to see that people remember the hero saving them until present times.

Russian Military Historical Society has initiated installation of the monument to Pechersky. There are several memorable places in Rostov-on-Don connected to the hero. The house where he spent his last years is decorated with a commemorative plate. Besides, the street in one of the new city districts bears his name too. Sobibor camp was located in Poland. Almost 250 000 were killed there in less than 2 years. The majority of these people were Polish, French, Austrian and Russian Jews.

The camp ceased to exist after the prisoners’ revolt headed by Pechersky.

The movie is timed with the 75th anniversary of the revolt. The movie fragments were shown to the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Some fragments of the movie were screened in the German Parliament and at the symposium dedicated to the camp held in Vienna. The pre-premiere screening of the movie was also arranged in the State Duma. The premiere was held in Warsaw.
