Director of the Institute of Russian Literature (IRLI) or Pushkin House at RAS, Vsevolod BAGNO, discusses the use of pulp fiction and revival of the Russian school of literary translation in his interview for the Russkiy Mir portal. – Mr Vsevolod, our country was once famous for its strong translation school which now seems to be a thing of the past, why? – This was a rare phenomenon indeed that largely arose for artificial reasons. Since there was no business in the country, the brightest minds flocked to sciences and humanities, including philology. In the West philology departments had the lowest ratings, but in this country...

Last October reputable American political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski said that “Russians are more open to the world now than ever before.” This of course is flattering but less than the full story. It seems once again that the history of country is no longer than the life story of Brzezinski, who is turning 84 in March. In 2012 we are going to celebrate a rather conditional holiday – the 1,150th anniversary of the Russian statehood. It is conditional because no historian takes this given date for granted, for the Russian statehood could go back even futher! But this is not the point. Is it true that Russia has never been...

The 200th anniversary of victory in the Patriotic War of 1812 is yet to come, but its grenadier’s step can already be heard. Twelve months sharp are left for Russian newly elected MPs of the VI Convocation to legislate a Day of Russian Military Glory to be celebrated on this special date. This is my request as a citizen, if you please, and many of my compatriots will surely back this initiative. In 1995, the total of 16 days of Military Glory were named, six of them dating back to the days of WWII and two going back to the Northern War of Peter the Great against the Swedes. The seizure of Ismail and the victory of Admiral Ushakov at...

For some reason I am certain that on December 19 media will make us mourn over the recently deceased ex-president of Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel. At least in the Internet and on some TV channels the process commenced immediately upon the news about Havel’s death was broadcast on Sunday morning. I am equally certain that few will remember Pyotr Rumyantsev this Monday either in Russia or in Czech Republic. It’s clear that unlike Havel, Count Rumyantsev-Zadunaisky did not leave this world yesterday, but rather 215 years ago on December 19, 1796. Meanwhile the Count did more service to both Russia and the entire Slavonic world,...

Executive Director of the Russkiy Mir Foundation Vyacheslav Nikonov spoke with a correspondent of Komsomolskaya Pravda about the recent protests in Moscow. Nikonov notes that many of the elements present during the Orange Revolution in Ukraine are lacking in Russia today. – Last Saturday a large protest was held on Bolotnaya Square. Do you see an analogy with the Maidan protests in 2004?  – In part, yes; in part, no. Maidan was the result of many years of work to build up the opposition, which had distinct and bright leaders who claimed that they had won Ukraine’s presidential elections. Maidan was the apotheosis of...

Established in early 2011, the Institute of Translation aims to restore the global status of contemporary Russian literature by setting up a flow of quality foreign literature and creating conditions for a restart of Russian literature translations into foreign languages.  Two events in 2011 – establishment of the Institute of Translation at the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Science (also known as the Pushkin House) and reinstatement of the translation department (ethnic languages of Russia and CIS) at the Gorky Literary Institute – foretell the return of well translated books to the bookstore...
