Russian President Vladimir Putin called cultural diversity one of the country's greatest assets, TASS reports. He is sure that this could not be achieved without preserving national languages. Without them, ''fragments of culture'' would remain, the head of state explained. The Russian leader spoke about this during a meeting with residents of Anadyr in Chukotka on Wednesday, January, 10.

Vladimir Putin added that under Soviet rule, books and magazines were published in national languages, and proposed resuming this practice. He was also told about some features of the Chukchi language.

The President promised to extend the state program to support small indigenous peoples of the North. This year, according to the plan, the creation of a register of objects of intangible culture should begin, he specified. In his opinion, support for indigenous peoples needs more attention. It is important that libraries, theaters and other cultural institutions join this work.

In addition, Putin believes, it is important to formulate what needs to be done to support small peoples specifically in Chukotka. And here the question is not so much about financing as about organization. The work must be structured properly. These proposals will then form the foundation for the President’s instructions to the relevant departments.

It is necessary to ensure that such work brings a concise result, namely, the preservation of the culture and languages of the small peoples of the North, the Russian leader concluded.
