A resident of Odessa caused a scandal because of a street musician, who performed songs in Russian, Moskovsky Komsomolets reports. The conflict occurred on Deribasovskaya Street. A passerby suddenly attacked the performer. But other eyewitnesses rushed to stand up for the singer and demanded that the aggressive man calm down.

Last summer, a young street singer from Odessa faced critisism and persecution from law enforcement agencies for performing Viktor Tsoi’s songs in Russian in the center of Lvov. A scandal surrounding the 17-year-old boy erupted in June, when Verkhovna Rada deputy Natalya Pipa saw his street performance. Angered by the Russian language, the representative of parliament made sure the young man was placed in a shelter for minors and made him apologize publically in Ukrainian.

Last fall, Ukrainian border guards were ordered to go to the front line as punishment for listening to songs by a popular Russian pop group.

The fight against Russian cultural content, including songs in Russian, intensified in Ukraine last year. In a number of regions of the country, the performance of works in Russian is prohibited both in concert halls and on the streets. Listening to Russian songs is also banned.
