Russian geologists opened the Karpinsky Class in Ethiopia, St. Petersburg Vedomosti reports. The new educational center began operating at the Russian House site in Addis Ababa. The initiative to create it came from the Federal Agency of Natural Resources (Rosnedra) and the St. Petersburg Karpinsky Institute. Previously, such a center appeared in Ghana. These two countries of the African continent are united by the presence of rich natural resources. In particular, gold and precious stones are mined in Ethiopia; there are also deposits of tantalum ores, coal and other natural resources. Gas reserves have recently been discovered.

The country lacks investment, and most importantly, professional personnel, to develop the extractive industries. Geologists, geophysicists, and technologists are very needed. At the same time, it is very important to train national specialists.

The head of the Karpinsky Institute, Pavel Khimchenko, said that the new sites will help promote the Russian geological school. It is planned to hold open lectures, seminars and practical classes in geology. In addition, they will become centers for the implementation of joint geology projects. Specialists from Russia, Ghana and Ethiopia are also expected to exchange professional experience, conduct internships and joint field work.
