Russian scientists are working on a new vaccine, RIA Novosti reports. According to Evgeny Shlyakhto, who heads the Almazov Medical Research Center, the drug is aimed at protecting not only against coronavirus, but also against influenza. The expert noted that the project brings together several groups of leading researchers at once.

The vaccine will combine components that make it possible to create immunity from both influenza and coronavirus infection.

It's too early to talk about the result, work on the drug has just begun, Shlyakhto stated. It still has animal and clinical trials to go through.

Russia became the first country in the world to register a vaccine against the new coronavirus. Its name, Sputnik V, relates to another historical event - the launch in 1957 of the first artificial satellite of the planet. The title emphasizes the importance of creating a vaccine for the global community.

More than 20 countries have sent requests for a total of one billion doses of vaccine.
