16th International Tchaikovsky Competition opens in Moscow

Tchaikovsky Competition, which starts on Monday, June 17, will open with a speech by Daniel Trifonov. Young pianist won the last competition, the website of the competition reports. 

Contestants will be evaluated by famous musicians from different countries of the world, including ones from Russia. In particular, the panel of judges of the piano section is headed by Denis Matsuev. The violinists will be judged by Martin Engström from Sweden. The jury chairman is maestro Valery Gergiev. 

The organizers of the competition are the Government and Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation, Rosconcert, Sberbank, Rostelecom, Carmel Cultura Endowment For The Arts, and the Mariinsky Foundation of America. 

Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets expressed hope for absolute objectivity. She assured that Russia is ready for this "landmark event in the music world". Olga Golodets recalled that the history of the competition exceeds 60 years and discovers new names every time. 

This year, the organizers received almost 1000 applications from 60 countries. 230 performers from thirty six countries passed the selection in the first round. Among them are musicians from Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the USA, China and other states.

All children's music schools in the country held their competitions, the winners of which will become spectators at the final competitive auditions. 

24 violinists, a pianist and a cellist were invited to the first stage. 60 singers and 96 musicians playing wind instruments will compete for victory. 

As Russkiy Mir reported, Tchaikovsky International Competition will be the 16th in a row. It is held every four years. Moscow and St. Petersburg were chosen as the venue. 

Participants in the competition among pianists, violinists and cellists will receive six prizes each. Eight prizes will be awarded to the best performers on wooden and brass instruments. Four rewards are meant for vocalists. In addition, Grand Prix will be awarded.
