The representatives of Russia drew attention to the gross violation of the UNESCO’s normative acts during a speech at the regular session of the organization’s Executive Committee, Russian Foreign Ministry reported on its website. By signing the Convention to Combat Discrimination in Education, the countries deprived national minorities of access to education in their native language. Russia is confident that the result of this decision will increase tensions between representatives of different nationalities. Moscow expressed the hope that the situation in Latvia and Ukraine would receive an objective assessment by UNESCO.

In addition, Russia considers the restoration of the cultural heritage of Syria an important task. Many historical relics, antiquities, preserved from ancient times to the present day, monuments of the world historical heritage suffered from the barbaric actions of terrorists or were completely destroyed. Russia hopes that UNESCO will take an active part in the restoration of the monuments of Palmyra and Aleppo. The country has offered to use the possibilities of the Memorandum between UNESCO and the Russian Hermitage on the protection and restoration of cultural property in conflict zones, particularly in the Middle East.

Moscow is concerned about the attempts of some countries to restrict freedom of speech, to divide the media into “right” and “wrong” under the pretext of combating disinformation. It can be viewed as new forms of censorship. UNESCO needs to be more attentive to such undertakings and act openly, without turning the organization into an arena for testing doubtful initiatives, Russian diplomats say.
