Vladimir Putin honors Russian soldiers perished in WW1

Russian President Vladimir Putin has laid flowers at the monument to the soldiers of the Russian Expeditionary Force, TASS reports. He took part in events dedicated to the 100 years anniversary of the First World War armistice marked on November 11 in the French capital.

The descendants of those who fought in the war a hundred years ago came to the monument together with the Russian leader.

According to the head of state, he was very happy to see them here. Vladimir Putin assures that Russia will preserve the memory of the soldiers who fell during the First World War.

The ceremony participants presented the president with a book entitled Patriotism without Borders.

Earlier Russkiy Mir reported that, a monument to Russian soldiers graces the embankment of the Seine for seven years. It is installed in the historic center of Paris near the bridge, which bears the name of the Russian Emperor Alexander III. The sculptor Vladimir Surovtsev became the author of the monument. The statue commemorates the soldiers and officers of the Russian Expeditionary Force. Russian Emperor Nicholas II sent the aid unit to France in 1916. After bloody battles, the German forces were stopped near Reims and could not occupy Paris.

The Russian President participated in an international ceremony nearby the Arc de Triomphe. There gathered the heads of the member-states of the war as well as US President Donald Trump.

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a short speech about war and peace and lit a fire at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A concert was held during the ceremony. The European Union Youth Orchestra performed Bolero by Maurice Ravel and so on. It played under the button of the Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko.
