Russian School Abroad project should be implemented as soon as possible, according to the Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev who made this statement during the round table On Improving Protection Mechanisms of Human Rights and Legal Interests of the Russian Compatriots living abroad, the Parliamentary Newspaper informs.

He has underlined that the Russian School Abroad project was launched as early as 2015. The Russian Foreign Ministry states that the implementation of the project is scheduled for 2021 only. The member of the Federation Council has underlined that such decisions must be taken in a due course and must be complied with the decisions of the Russian President.

Note that earlier, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Russia should work out a regulatory draft concerning support and development of the Russian language and education in the Russian language around the world.

As the Russkiy Mir Foundation has reported earlier, the number of the Russian schools abroad is diminishing. The reasons for closing the schools differ, but, basically, they come down to the present political situation, which is deteriorating, especially, in Ukraine.

Currently, tough fights for preservation of the Russian schools are unwrapped in Latvia. The country’s authorities, despite numerous protest strikes by the Russian-speaking population, approved of the draft stipulating the secondary and higher education in the Latvian language only.

At this, in Germany, for instance, 18 Russian schools were opened over the last couple of years. Spain opened 6 schools, the South-Eastern Asia started around 15 Russian schools.
