Classical music festival in Finland is devoted to Shchedrin and Stravinsky

Ministry of Culture of the Russian FederationClassical music festival opens today in Mikkeli, Finland, Ministry of Culture portal informs. The creative director of the festival is Valery Gergiev during last 25 years.

This year music of Yan Sibelius, Rodion Shchedrin, and Igor Stravinsky will be in the center of attention. The main guest of the festival is the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra.

During the festival opening symphonic poem Finlandia by Sibelius, Sixth Symphony and First Piano Concert by Tchaikovsky are played. For the first time the Finnish classical music fans will hear Funeral Song by Stravinsky, recently discovered among his early works. Famous pianist Danis Matsuev will play at the final concert of the festival.

Aside of the concerts, music history lectures and chamber music concerts will take place.

An interesting event will happen as a part of the program. It is a traditional football match that will involve the team of Mikkeli and the Mariinsky Theatre team.
