The Day of Russian Parliamentarism is celebrated in Russia on April 27, the date when the opening meeting of the State Duma was held in 1906, TASS reports. This year, Russia celebrates the 110th anniversary of parliamentary government.

According to Valentina Matvienko, Head of the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, it was then when the idea of popular representation and the rule of law was realized.

The Day of Russian Parliamentarism has been celebrated for 4 years now and lectures and expositions dealing with the history of Russian electoral institutions are arranged on the occasion. The main festivities are scheduled for Friday, April 29 and are to be held at the the Taurida Palace in Saint Petersburg. The speakers of both chambers of the federal assembly Valentina Matvienko and Sergey Narishkin will take part in them.

Yet a year ago a decision to date the report on Russian Legislation to the Day of Russian Parliamentarism was made. It used to be made public on the eve of Constitution Day.

According to Valentina Matvienko, the members of the Russian Parliament do their best to improve the quality of life for Russians, to enforce the respect of their constitutional rights and freedoms and stand up for Russian citizens on the global stage. Besides, “a tradition of holding a constructive dialogue provides political stability, the development of both Russian regions and the whole country”, she said.
