Geographical Dictations are supposed to be carried out annually, reports RIA «Novosti». This year they are to be held in the fall during the school holidays.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov heading the Media Council of the Russian Geographical society stressed that taking into account the results of the first experience of that kind such dictations are necessary. He emphasized that a little over 49% of the participants had got extremely low grades for the dictation and added that “The RGS should be more responsible for the promotion of geographical knowledge among Russian people”.

It is to be recalled that , the first All-Russian Geographical dictation showed that most Russian were extremely bad at geography. The average score did not exceed 55 of 100. According to the Russian Federation five-point academic grading system, the results corresponded to a “3”. About half of those who wrote the dictation failed to reach even that low grade. Those who got the highest grade made about 1%.

As it was reported by the clearing house of the “Russkiy Mir”, the RGS carried out the first geographical dictation last November. The dictation is supposed to improve geographical knowledge of Russian people and to heighten their interest to that science. In addition, the RGS is planning to ask the Ministry of Education to increase the number of geography classes given at schools. The RGS is developing a new geography educational standard at present.
