Two-time Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Chernyakhovsky died at the age of 38 while fighting a battle against the Werhmacht to liberate Pieniężno. The monument honouring his victory had stood here since the 1970s.

As reported by the information service of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the Russian Foreign Ministry has previously called Poland to task for its "war against monuments".

On hearing the news, Nikolay Tuskanov, governor of Russia' most western region, the exclave of Kaliningrad which borders Poland, announced that the city of Kaliningrad would be proud to host the monument. Novgorod Region Governor Sergey Mitin also said that the monument could be installed at Novgorod.

General Chernyakhovsky will soon be commemorated in Moscow. The Russian Military History Association have announced that a new monument to the general will be installed on the street which bears his name in Moscow.
