Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky told journalists at TASS that children spend too little time in school. The minister argues that children are not given enough to do and should arrive in the morning and leave only in the evening.

The minister believes that keeping children in school all day will prevent them from wasting their time in the evening. The minister says keeping children in school longer would also relieve pressure on parents, who are at work when their children get home after lunch and worry what their children are doing, where they are, and whether they are doing their homework.

The Education Ministry, on the contrary, has developed a series of recommendations suggesting that the amount of time children spend on schoolwork should be limited. The recommendations have been developed in cooperation with medical experts, child psychologists and teachers. The experts were called to submit their guidances to the ministry after a number of parents complained that their children are forced to do homework until late in the evening.

As reported by the information service of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, polling data confirms that most Russians believe that their children are given too much work to do.
