Presentation of the Book about Peter the Great in Groningen

15.04.2013

A short time ago the book The Tsar of Great Russia in the Dutch Republic: Second Visit of Peter the Great to the Netherlands (1716-1717) by professor of Leuven Catholic University (Belgium) Emmanuel Vagemans saw light in the Netherlands.

On April 11, the Russian Center of Groningen University and the Dutch-Russian Center held a presentation of the book in Groningen.

The book author Professor Vagemans narrated on how the materials had been gathered and on the process of writing this book. While a lot had been written about the virst visit of Peter I to the Netherlands in 1697-1698, much less was known about his second visit in 1716-1717. The book was devoted to this second visit of the Russian tsar. Described in minutest detail was the sojourn of Peter the Great in the Dutch Republic. The reader is offered a lot of exciting evidence of eyewitnesses. The book contains numerous illustrations from the archives and rare books going back to the XVIII century.

After the presentation the author answered questions. Visitors could buy books signed by the author. The presentation of this book translated into Russian will take place this coming June in St. Petersburg.
