Russkiy Mir Expands its Presence in Transnistria

24.12.2009

December 22 the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation hosted the award ceremony of The Fifth All-Russian Competition December 24 Children’s library of Slobozia hosted the opening of the first Russian Room. In his welcome Mikhail Nosov, representative of the Russkiy Mir Foundation said he was sure that hundreds of children’s books featuring novels and stories by Russian classical writers would help children of Transnistria have a deeper insight into the Russian culture.

Another Russian Room was launched in Grigoriopol.

The above-mentioned initiative mark continuation of a cooperation between the Russkiy Mir Foundation and Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. In 2009 in the frame of the project the foundation launched a Russian Room at the Central Library of Tiraspol and a Russian Center at Transnistria State University.

Thirty percent of Transnistria population is Russian and nearly all people speak the Russian language. Due to a sophisticated economic and political standing of this small de facto independent republic, Russia’s support is vital. Local libraries report a strong lack of modern Russian books, that is why the foundation’s present – dictionaries, encyclopedias, audio-collections, films etc. was more than welcome by the local community.

During a meeting between Mikhail Nosov and Evgeny Schevchuk, President of Transnistria State University, the foundation’s representative said that the Russkiy Mir Foundation primarily aims at providing support to Russian people living in other countries. He also hopes that Russian Rooms and Russian Centers launched in Transnistria will help people know more about the Russian culture and history and will bring tangible benefit.

President of Transnistria State University said: “Transnistria has always been open for cooperation with the Russkiy Mir Foundation. We are happy that our joint project is implemented on a regular basis and covers all regions of our republic. We will spare no effort in promoting the Russian language and culture”.

In the course of the meeting the parties have agreed on opening of Russian Rooms in Dubгsari and Kamenka in early 2010.
