Medvedev Participates in Launch of New Submarine

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev, arrived in the city of Severodvinsk on Tuesday to attend a ceremony launching the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine, Voice of Russia reports.

The Severodvisnk is a fourth generation multipurpose nuclear submarine named after the city where a defense dockyard is located. The submarine's construction began in 1993 but was suspended due to economic difficulties and the new requirements to modern warfare.

It is expected to be in service in 2011. Six submarines of this type are planned to be constructed.
