Medvedev Says G8 and G20 Summits Were Successful

The President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has described the G8 and G20 summits in Canada ‘successful’. “The talks were productive as we touched upon many pressing issues such as drug trafficking, environmental protection, nuclear security, finances...,” Mr. Medvedev wrote in his KremlinRussia Twitter account he launched while touring the United States last week.

Mr. Medvedev has promised to submit to the parliament a draft bill on the protection of the marine environment from oil leaks, and urged the world leaders to fight drug threat globally. The G8 summit’s final plenary session took place June 26 with the participation of eight heads of state and government. The agenda included key issues of international security, joint fight against terrorism and the nuclear program of Iran and North Korea.

The discussion on non-proliferation focused on the nuclear program of Iran and North Korea. Russia unquestionably supports only political and diplomatic methods in their settlement on the basis of dialogue in strict compliance with international law and UN resolutions.

The meeting also reviewed vital regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East. As other G8 states, Russia is interested in the situation in Afghanistan returning to normal as soon as possible and the country becoming a strong and stable state. The meeting's participants reviewed possible steps of the international community in combating terrorism and resolving socioeconomic problems in that country. It is of primary importance for Russia to end the drug threat emanating from Afghanistan.

Regarding the issue of Middle East settlement, the Russian party believes that the ongoing indirect talks between Palestine and Israel should become a direct dialogue as soon as possible and be aimed at creating an independent and viable Palestinian state that coexists in peace and security with Israel.

The G20 countries have agreed a coordinated economic policy they hope will help them increase global output by almost $4 trillion, create 52 million new jobs and lift up to 90 million people out of poverty, RIA Novosti reports.
