Russia Celebrates Child Protection Day

01.06.2010

Russia observes International Day of Child Protection on June 1st. This is the 60th year that this day has been celebrated, Voice of Russia reports. It is traditionally marked by events and campaigns that target challenged children and orphans with social and health-related problems all across the country.

Education Minister Andrei Fursenko says there are as many as 30 million orphans and children with special needs in Russia. Last year 300 thousand orphans found a new home by at least 100 thousand more are still sheltered by child care institutions. The minister points out the need to protect the rights and freedoms of the young as one of Russia’s priorities.

The celebrations were started by the council of the international women’s democratic federation in the USSR in 1950.
