On June 15 a Russkiy Mir Cabinet was opened at Universidade do Minho (Minho University) in the city of Braga, Portugal. Below is an interview with one of the initiators of the opening of this mini-Russian language library, Nadejda Ivanovna Nagovitsina Machado, a lecturer at the university’s Institute of Arts and Human Sciences.
– How did the idea of opening the Russkiy Mir Cabinet arise?
– The suggestion was first made by Rossotrudnichestvo representative Vladimir Shatalin, who knew about the teaching of Russian language at our university and many cultural events which we hold, some of which were organized with support from...
On June 18, 1862, exactly 150 years ago, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Abolition Bill voted in by the Congress both on the territories that were already part of the United States and on the lands yet to join the North-American Nation.
True, it took three years of Civil War and more than half a million victims for that bill to become a reality.
You may wonder why we need to care about what happened in the USA 150 years ago.
We don’t have to, but this is a good occasion to talk about the traditional attitude to Russia on the part of so-called developed nations and their interpretation of our so-called natural barbarianism....
“Playing con anima and fighting to the end” – these words pasted on the side of the Russian national team’s bus were its official motto at the Euro. The motto was chosen by fans who wanted their players to fight up to the last ditch. Russian people have always extolled the heart above the mind, even though this may not always be appropriate.

Throughout the group stage one could not get rid of the feeling...
Foreigners coming to work in the U.S. are obliged to not only speak English, but also know the nuances of slang. In Russia, however, only a few foreign managers learn the Russian language and their Russian colleagues do everything to make their life easier.
Luke Jones, a partner at the Antal Russia recruiting company, learned Russian during his university years in the UK. When he came to Russia, however, he realized that the knowledge he had was not enough; he knew no profanities or slang.
“An angry administrator lady in my hotel was swearing with the words I couldn’t find in any of my books,” he said. “I could...
When I had to change the day and route of driving from my suburban home because of never-ending traffic jams, I had to plunge into a rather odd everyday life of people living on the outskirts of the suburban city of Noginsk. What struck me most were lines of people waiting at the doors of the local blood transfusion station. I could not believe that there were so many responsible blood donors among our people. My skeptical attitude was soon corroborated by the Research Center of the Superjob.ru portal which reported that the capital city lacked 39% of the donor blood it actually needed. For Russia this figure is even higher – up to...
