Russia became the chairman of the CIS on January 1, RIA Novosti reports. Among its tasks, Moscow considers strengthening its authority in the CIS and expanding ties with regional associations. Another important topic is consolidation in countering external challenges. It is also going to focus on expanding cultural and humanitarian ties, cooperation in the field of healthcare, science, education and sports.

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia sees its main task as the chairman of the CIS in expanding ties between peoples. It is important, he added, that friendship and good neighborliness throughout the CIS become stronger. He promised that Moscow would do everything possible for this.

It is also planned to strengthen cooperation in the economic sphere and to make more active use of national currencies in payments. Vladimir Putin is sure that this step will help ensure the sovereignty of the CIS countries in the economy and finances.

It is equally important to expand cooperation in countering the rewriting of history and the fight against Nazism. The already traditional projects ''Immortal Regiment'', ''Train of Memory'' and ''St. George’s Ribbon'' are in great demand there.

In 2024, the Games of the Future will be held in Kazan for the first time. The leaders of the CIS countries are invited to attend the opening ceremony.

A youth festival is scheduled for early spring. Its participants will be representatives of almost 200 countries who will gather in Kazan.

In 2024, Russia will also chair BRICS. Moscow plans to help strengthen ties between these organizations.

The traditional CIS summit is planned to be held on October, 8 in Moscow. Another event that will bring together heads of state in Russia could be an informal pre-New Year’s meeting in St. Petersburg, which has already become a tradition. The program of Russia's presidency will include about 150 events.
