Russian athletes won medal standings of Games of CIS countries

The first place in the medal standings of the Games of the CIS countries went to Russian athletes, TASS reports. They have 288 awards to their credit, almost half of them are gold. The Russian team climbed to the top step of the podium 109 times. 

The hosts of the tournament - the Belarusians - became second and won 236 medals. The third was the team of Uzbekistan. The tournament ended the day before, on August, 13.

The 2nd Games of the CIS countries started in Minsk on August, 5. Athletes from 22 countries took part in them. In addition to nine CIS countries, other countries sent their teams to the competition, including Iran, Lebanon, Cuba, Vietnam, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Russian team included more than 400 athletes. They competed in 20 sports. Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin noted that the Russian delegation at the Games was one of the most numerous ones.

In total, more than 2,200 athletes competed in basketball, boxing, volleyball, handball, various martial arts, athletics, futsal, swimming, beach volleyball, beach soccer, archery, rhythmic gymnastics and other sports. The tournament unfolded in 11 Belarusian cities.

The CIS Games have already become the second in a row. Kazan hosted them for the first time. Next year, Gyumri, Armenia will be the sports capital of the CIS.
