The construction of an experimental thermonuclear reactor ITER (ITER, International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) has begun in France. The large international project is being implemented with the participation of 35 countries, including Russia, RIA Novosti reports.

The reactor is being built in the south of France, near the Cadarache research center. It is reported that the reactor will allow the use of a thermonuclear reaction to generate energy on an industrial scale. With its help, experts hope to obtain an almost inexhaustible source of energy.

The project involves 29 EU states, as well as Russia, the United States, China, India, Japan and South Korea.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent greetings on the occasion of the commencement of assembly and installation of reactor equipment. He called the project a shining example of effective multilateral cooperation. The Russian leader also recalled that Russia became one of the founders of the project initiative, which is based on the concept of the Tokamak plant, developed by Russian specialists. The goal of the ITER project is to achieve the energy security of mankind.

The launch of the reactor and the production of the first plasma on it are scheduled for 2025.
