International Literacy Day is celebrated on Friday, September, 8, Parliamentary Gazette reports.

The memorial date was established by UNESCO in 1966 on the recommendation of the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Elimination of Illiteracy. The forum, which began on September 8, 1965, was held in the capital of Iran. Literacy Day coincided with the anniversary of the opening of the conference.

UNESCO notes that today the number of illiterate adults in the world exceeds 750 million people. Most of them are women.

The holiday is aimed at advancing the activities of international organizations to spread literacy, which remains one of the most important areas of UNESCO’s work. The key venue for the celebration is the UNESCO headquarters, located in Paris. Various events and festivals are held in Russia.

A large online marathon is dedicated to Literacy Day, during which the name of the author of next year’s ''Total Dictation'' will be announced.
