British sailors, who took part in the Northern convoys during the Great Patriotic War, will receive Ushakov medals, RIA Novosti reports. The signature on the corresponding decree was put by the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The document notes that the medals for courage will be awarded to six British citizens. The decree is published on the official Internet website of legal information.

During the war years, the northern sea routes were the shortest route for transporting military and civilian cargo from the United States and Great Britain to help the Soviet Union. Ship crossings took about 10-12 days, during which the ships were under continuous shelling - the convoys were bombed by German aircraft and attacked by ships.

During the war, 40 convoys of more than 800 vessels arrived in the northern ports of the USSR. 715 ships returned to the ports of Great Britain and Iceland, 87 allied ships were destroyed.
