Date with Russia Film Festival started in South Africa

The festival of Russian cinema called Date with Russia started in South Africa on Tuesday, May 5, according to TASS. It is dedicated to the upcoming Victory Day. Like all other events in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, it is taking place online.

The festival opened with The Rout of German Troops Near Moscow documentary. It was shot at the Central Newsreel Studio in late 1941 - early 1942. In 1943, the film won the Oscar award as the best documentary. The festival program also includes Roman Carmen’s Unknown War.

According to Elina Komarova-Tagar, one of the participants in the Russian club of Cape Town, the festival has become a very important event. She assured that compatriots were actively working to familiarize the inhabitants of South Africa with Russian films about the victory of the Soviet people over fascism. In South Africa, there are also several veterans of World War II, who were participants in the Northern convoys.

The online project will cover not only South Africa, but also other countries that are members of the BRICS. Alexander Ilyin, who heads the Date with Russia Festival, is sure that the films have not lost their relevance today. They are dedicated to Russia, its exploits and tragedies, ways to overcome difficulties.

The current action, along with film screenings, allows viewers to share their thoughts and feelings about captured events on the online platform.
