The British city of Coventry decided to award its twin city Volgograd, the Rossotrudnichestvo website reports. The Russian city will be the first to be honored for special merits. Usually this award is awarded to people for outstanding personal achievements or for the ideals of citizenship.

The City Council expressed confidence that the historical cooperation that developed between the cities over the years was entirely consistent with the spirit of the award.

The management of Coventry is confident that ties with Volgograd have not weakened during 75 years. Delegates from Russia became honored guests at the ceremonies of the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen and took part in other events.

Volgograd is also the UN peace messenger city. It was one of the first to receive such a status, and now continues to do everything to strengthen peace and mutual understanding between peoples.

Volgograd, where one of the largest battles took place, which was a turning point in the history of World War II, became the twin city of Coventry 75 years ago. The British city was almost completely destroyed by a raid of German bombers in the spring of 1941.

The anniversary of twinning will be celebrated in both countries. Guests from Volgograd will come to Coventry, where representatives of the city authorities will be awarded.

The Dialogue on the Volga: Peace and Mutual Understanding in the 21st Century International Forum will be devoted to the same date. It is scheduled for the end of November and will be held in Volgograd.

The role of twin cities in the development of international humanitarian cooperation will be discussed at a round table with representatives of state and public organizations, Russian and foreign specialists and experts.
