Russian President Vladimir Putin invited the head of the Japanese government, Shinzo Abe, to sign a peace treaty this year, Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes. This should be done without any preliminary conditions, he said during the meeting on the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
The Japanese Prime Minister earlier stressed that he agrees with the Russian leader that the absence of a peace treaty can not be considered as a normal situation.
The Russian president confirmed that Moscow was trying to reach a peace treaty. For seventy years Russia has attempted to find solutions to complex issues, negotiations have been held for several decades.
Vladimir Putin recalled the words of Shinzo Abe, who suggested changing approaches. "Let’s [change them.]" he announced unexpectedly.
The Russian leader explained that later this document would be the base of a friendly issues resolution between Moscow and Tokyo.
According to Vladimir Putin, this process will be much easier. He said that this "simple thought" came to him "right here and right now."
As Russkiy Mir reported, the possibility of signing this document was also discussed during the trip of Vladimir Putin to Japan in December 2016. There the sides reached an agreement on the joint use of the Kuril Islands that the Japanese side wanted to attach. In addition, Vladimir Putin proposed to consider the introduction of free border regime between the islands of Hokkaido and Sakhalin.
