'Queen of Pop' Sofia Rotaru celebrates 70th birthday

KinoPoiskCalled the 'Queen of Pop', Russian, Ukrainian, Moldavian and formerly USSR pop singer, People's Artist of the USSR Sofia Rotaru celebrates 70th birthday, TASS reports. She has started her career when was little. Her father was the first teacher, and her elder blind sister who was very talented also, taught her singing. At the age of 10 Sofia started singing in the kid's choir, and at the age of 17 she has won at the Republican's festival of people's talents in Kiev.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has send congratulations to the singer. He has marked sincerity and charisma of Rotaru, saying that she has “righteously won the recognition and love of numerous generations of fans” for being devoted to her fans and scene.

Sofia has became particularly popular in 1970s with the musical Chervona Ruta where she has played leading part of Carpathian young woman Oksana and also sang all the songs. After the grand success, she's got a job in the Chernovtsy Philharmonic and created her ensemble “Chervona Ruta”.

During her long career the singer has released more than 20 solo albums, won many musical domestic and international contests. Her repertoire includes more than 500 compositions.
