Sergey Kuryokhin's birthday to be celebrated in St. Petersburg

Birthday of Sergey Kuryokhin will be celebrated in St. Petersburg on June 16.

An outstanding pianist, prominent composer, founder of legendary Popular Mechanics, philosopher, actor, writer, mystificator – all roles of Kuryokhin are hard to count. He is, at the same time, the first showman of 80s-90s and the most serious musician of the Soviet underground having influenced Russian avant-garde music immensely. His famous band Popular Mechanics became blossom of all underground movement in Leningrad.

The invited will visit his grave at the Komarovskoye cemetery in the first half of the day. A commemorative concert will take place in Modern Art Center in the evening. The organizers announced a free entrance to the concert.

One of the founders of the legendary music band New Composers, Valery Alakhov is responsible for music background of the evening. Valery Alakhov and Sergey Kuryokhin made an experimental record titled Insect Culture in 1985. It was issued two years later and became a success among Western avant-garde musicians including Frank Zappa. The tracks of this record and some unpublished materials recorded for this album will be played for the audience. “This music was composed in a very interesting environment of mystery and secrecy in private apartments, because we were issuing a record abroad,” Alakhov commented. Besides, the guests will enjoy fashion performance arranged for the celebration by trash futurist and the main Popular Mechanic's artist Sergey Chernov.
