Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra has started a tour across Europe, TASS reports. Its Artistic Director Yuri Temirkanov will conduct the orchestra. The tour is dedicated to the maestro’s anniversary. This year the famous conductor is 80 years old.

The tour consists of 11 concerts in Austria, Germany, Luxembourg and Slovakia. Russian musicians will perform in Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, Bratislava.

According to the conductor, every year the team receives many invitations to perform at various venues. In his opinion, this proves the great prestige of the national performing school.

Yuri Temirkanov says it is fundamental as every concert in another country represents Russian culture.

He adds that the tour repertoire takes into account the wishes of the foreign countries. Mostly they ask to perform works of Russian composers.

This time the musicians will play Shostakovich’ symphony called Babi Yar. It is written on the basis of Yevtushenko’s poems about the Jews mass extermination by the Nazis in the occupied USSR territory.

The program will include works by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev.

As Russkiy Mir reported, orchestra had recently performed in China as part of the anniversary tour. The tickets were sold out and the performers enjoyed a long applause.
