Violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet turns 65

Russian Ministry of Culture World known Russian violist Yuri Bashmet has turned 65 today, January 24, TASS reports. Master says that another date is of much greater importance to him – this year is 50th anniversary of his musical career.

Yuri Bashmet will mark his anniversary in Moscow with concert titled Bashmet’s Planet. Bashmet will perform Viola concert by Alfred Shnitke, which played an extremely important role in his professional development. Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen, vilolinists from France and Russia Jean-Luc Ponty and Sergey Krulov, singer Nino Katamadze, actor Konstantin Khabensky, Chamber ensemble Soloists of Moscow and New Russia State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Bashmet will take part in the event.

Today’s evening will open Fifty Years with Viola international festival . The next day a concert of talented young violinists from South Korea, England, Russia and Ukraine will continue the celebration.

On January 28 the festival will wrap up with a romantic and contemporary music concert (all favorite pieces from Bashmet’s repertoire).

8th International contest Viola Masters is also timed with the legendary musician’s anniversary. Only winners of previous music competitions permitted to take part in this contest.
