Residents of Odessa did not support the renaming of the square, which bears the name of Leo Tolstoy, RIA Novosti reports. The city authorities proposed replacing the square name with the name of one of the founders of Jewish literature in Yiddish, Mendel Moikher-Sforim.

During the online voting,  it was proposed to rename almost 40 objects. By a majority vote, Odessa residents decided to keep Leo Tolstoy's name. They also opposed the proposal to change the name of Second Cherepanov Lane. It is named after Russian industrial engineers and inventors.

The war against Soviet monuments, which began in Ukraine after the 2014 coup, intensified last year. The country has also launched a wave of renaming of settlements, streets and other toponyms associated with Russia and the Soviet Union. In 2022, almost 10,000 geographical objects whose names were associated with Russia were renamed. Last year, the Kiev regime destroyed 145 monuments that perpetuated the historical ties between the two countries.
