The Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra is going on its first tour abroad after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, TASS reports.

On Saturday, October 3, the creative team of the theater is going to perform in Luxembourg. The concert program will include works by Igor Stravinsky, Dmitry Shostakovich and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Ukrainian pianist Vadim Kholodenko and German trumpeter Selina Ott will appear as soloists. The conductor's place will be taken by the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev.

On the next day, October 4, a performance will take place in Paris. The audience will hear Mussorgsky's opera Khovanshchina. Soloists Mikhail Petrenko, Evgeny Akimov, Yulia Matochina, Evgeny Nikitin and others will perform opera together with the chorus and the symphony orchestra. The performance will be directed by maestro Gergiev.

The conductor called the opera a chronicle of Russian history, of the Russian soul. He has no doubt that there is no other similar opera in the Russian musical tradition.

The Mariinsky Theater tours are part of the large-scale Russian Seasons cultural project. According to its director Alexei Lebedev, it is gratifying that the festival continues again and the meeting with the audience will take place live. He recalled that the coronavirus pandemic had blocked the opportunity to meet, speak and communicate with the public for seven months.
