Residents and guests of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were able to board the famous Russian Sedov sailing ship, the website of the Moscow House of Compatriots reports. The ship called at the Canary Islands port during a round-the-world trip, dedicated to the anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica.

Representatives of the local government, residents, Russian diplomats and compatriots were able to visit the At the South Pole exhibition. The exposition includes the work of artist Pavel Mikhailov. He accompanied the expedition of Bellingshausen and Lazarev, during which Antarctica was discovered 200 years ago. The artist made sketches and captured open islands, views of cities, which the sloops Vostok and Mirny visited, portraits of indigenous peoples on canvas and paper.

Mikhailov also carefully documented species of exotic flora and fauna. Now his work serves as a documentary confirmation of the priority of Russian researchers in the discovery of Antarctica.

Russkiy Mir reported that the ceremonial seeing off of the Sedov and Kruzenshtern Russian sailing ships of the Federal Agency for Fishery to the round-the-world expedition took place in the port of Kaliningrad in early December. The trip is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica and the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic war. The expedition called Sails of the World will last for about a year, the ships will cover almost one hundred thousand miles, more than six hundred cadets of Russian and foreign universities will practice on them.

The unique expedition to the Russian sailing fleet started in November, when the Pallada vessel set sail from Vladivostok. Three sailboats will meet near Antarctica, where they will hold a 200-mile regatta in honor of the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the continent.
