Solemn events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian sailors Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev took place in the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego. The main event in Ushuaia was the meeting of Russian sailing ships Pallada and Kruzenshtern participating in circumnavigation in honor of the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica and the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Rossotrudnichestvo website reports.

The meeting was attended by Russian ambassador to Argentina Dmitry Feoktistov and Russian diplomats. They boarded the ship and became participants in the ceremonies. The diplomats got acquainted with the conditions on board and learned details of the journey.

The meeting participants raised the topic of joint events dedicated to these anniversaries. The laying of flowers at the monument to the heroes of the Falklands War also took place.

The Discovery of Antarctica exhibition was prepared as part of the program of events. Materials for the exposition, housed in the Maritime Museum of Ushuaia, were prepared by representatives of Rossotrudnichestvo and the Russian Geographical Society.
