The Ranker, a well-known rating service from Los Angeles Ranker, specializing in surveys and social studies, included Russian writers Fedor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy in the top three writers of all time. According to the survey, only William Shakespeare was ahead of Russian classics. The top ten also includes Charles Dickens, Homer, John Ronald Tolkien, George Orwell, Edgar Alan Poe, Shota Rustaveli and Mark Twain.

The site has published a list of several hundred writers, whom survey participants called the greatest writers in history. In addition to the mentioned Russian authors, the list also included Anton Chekhov, Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Vladimir Nabokov.

Presenting the survey data, Ranker employees emphasize that "the pen is indeed mightier than the sword." According to the authors of the study, writers who were in the leading positions in the ranking “formed the history of mankind, capturing the most important historical events and reflecting the culture of a changing world”.

Ranker is considered one of the world's leading online survey sites. It is reported that almost 50 million unique visitors participate in the company’s research per month.
