The western countries, led by Washington, are trying with all their might to “tear off” Georgia and neighboring countries from Russia, the head of the Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov says. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry website, Lavrov made the statement in an interview with the Latin American media and the RT television channel.

The minister assured that Moscow never wanted its relations with Tbilisi to deteriorate. It was the Georgian authorities under Mikhail Saakashvili who caused the break in diplomatic relations and restrictions in the trade and economic sphere.

Nevertheless, the foreign minister added, the economic issues played its role, trade was restored.

The Foreign Minister recalled that in 2008 Saakashvili decided to deal with South Ossetia and Abkhazia with the help of military force. At that time, there were many “instructors” from overseas in Georgia. Americans worked with Georgian special forces and the army.

Lavrov called orders aimed at seizing South Ossetia criminal. Mikheil Saakashvili, while being the president of Georgia, attacked the citizens of his country and peacekeepers, among whom were Russians. An investigation conducted by the European Union proved that the hostilities in South Ossetia were started by Tbilisi.

Nevertheless, there is no bias towards the people of Georgia in Russia, the foreign minister underlined. Two nations have lived side by side for centuries, and we treat each other’s culture and traditions very well.

It is not yet clear whether the United States will be able to come to some conclusions after the refusal of the Russian leader from sanctions against Georgia. Unfortunately, the minister added, they have great power ambitions. He is confident that, if the United States headed for establishing relations based on mutual respect and took into account the interests of all its partners - not only Russia, but also China, the European Union and other countries - then solving any problem in the world would be much easier.
