In his speech, Russian Foreign Minister expressed concern over the US’s reluctance to extend the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty (SORT). According to Lavrov, the Americans rejected several Russian initiatives related to non-proliferation of weapons and refused to accept a joint statement on the inadmissibility of nuclear war. The minister also criticized Washington’s actions in the Gulf region, calling them "destructive."

Lavrov discussed these and other issues during a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. According to the Russian minister, representatives of the two countries spoke about conflicts in different parts of the world. Separately, the parties paid attention to the situation in Ukraine and expressed hope that Ukraine would comply with the Minsk agreements.

Sergey Lavrov also expressed indignation to the US representative about America’s refusal to issue visas to a number of Russian delegates to the UN and pointed out the futility of the sanction pressure on Russia.
