Consultative Committee of the Council of Europe for the Protection of National Minorities urges the Government of Lithuania to review legislation in order to prevent discrimination of students at the schools for national minorities, and to get rid of the negative stereotypes concerning Roma, Rubaltic.ru reports.

The Committee supported the re-establishment of the National Minorities Department in Lithuanian executive structures, and according to European officials, this has increased the awareness about the problems of national minorities in the Baltic republic.

At the same time, the absence of comprehensive legislative framework impedes the “implementation of important linguistiс rights”, such as spelling of names in the formal documents and use of minor languages in topographical signs

The largest national minorities in Lithuania are Poles (6.6%) and Russians (5.8%). The Council of Europe has already urged Lithuania to fight against discrimination in October of 2018.
