The destruction of monuments to Soviet soldiers who liberated Europe from fascism is a direct consequence of the Lithuanian authorities policy, the Russian Embassy in the country says. Vilnius seeks to distort the results of the Second World War. For these ends, it labels the soldiers-liberators as "invaders", the RIA Novosti reports the diplomats to comment on the statue demolition in Alytus County of Lithuania.

Earlier another monument to Soviet soldiers was destructed in the Baltic republic. It was installed about 40 years ago on the initiative of local residents. It looked like a huge boulder showing the face of a Red Army soldier in a helmet. The monument perpetuated the place where one of the first tank battles of the Eastern Front of the Second World War took place. Local authorities handed the monument over to the Grutas Sculpture Garden of Soviet-Era Statues.

The Russian Embassy calls the demolition of the monument "a shameful practice of a civilized country."

Diplomats say that the monument has long irritated those who understand patriotism in this way. Apparently, the "pseudo-patriots" decided that the time for their activities has come.

Note, the monument has repeatedly suffered from vandal attacks. Now Vilnius decided to get rid of the evidence of victory over fascism and of the monument symbolizing gratitude and eternal memory to those who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom of future generations.
