Deputies of the Estonian capital refused to transfer all Russian schools into Estonian, Sputnik reports. The authors of this initiative from the Isamaa faction proposed a total “estonization” of education in Tallinn. They assumed that this process would be completed in six years. In their opinion, the city authorities have everything necessary to implement this step.

The city government at its meeting on December 11 rejected the offer. Oleg Nazmutdinov, who is one of the leaders of the Estonian Russian School organization, is confident that the idea of destroying Russian-language education is not based on pedagogical aspects at all. Nazmutdinov noted that political motives were playing the leading role in that case. The authors of the initiative are convinced that Estonia should belong to Estonians.

Meanwhile, for the sustainable development of society and the country, the opinion of national minorities must be taken into account, Nazmutdinov said. He called the nationalist proposal a risky afair.

Previously, Estonian president Kersti Kaljulaid spoke in favor of the liquidation of Russian schools. According to her, she is disappointed that teaching in Russian is still preserved in the country. There are currently 74 secondary schools in different regions of Estonia where one can get education in Russian, but their number is constantly decreasing. A fifth of all schoolchildren in the country study in Russian schools in Estonia.

Earlier, the representative of the Russian School of Estonia Dmitry Sukhoroslov called the situation that had developed in Russian-language education in Estonia critical. He said that during a speech at an OSCE meeting.

According to Sukhoroslov, during thirty years of independence, Tallinn has almost completely destroyed the educational system in Russian. The authorities liquidated the higher school, transferred the secondary school level to the state language. In addition, the training system for Russian schools was completely and deliberately destroyed.
