Crimea will have to be recognized as Russian peninsula sooner or later, former German chancellor Gerhard Schroder said in an interview with Aachener Nachrichten.

“This is the reality that will have to be admitted one day. By the way, in 1954 Soviet leader Khrushchev gifted the Crimea formerly owned by Russia to Soviet Ukraine. He thought that Soviet communism would live as long as the Catholic Church. Fortunately, it did not happen", the German politician claimed.

He also stressed that Europe needed to restore cooperation with Russia, adding that the country is its closest neighbor and there will not be a long-term peace on the continent without it.
