The Russian Foreign Ministry labeled the closure of checkpoints on the Russian-Finnish border a provocation, expressing diplomatic protest. They asserted that this decision aligns with Helsinki's intention to deteriorate relations between the two countries. The message was conveyed to Finnish Ambassador Antti Helantera on Monday, November 20.

Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the abrupt closure of checkpoints, asserting it goes against the rights and interests of tens of thousands of citizens from both countries. The decision, made without consulting Russia, was implemented in hurry, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Reportedly,  Finnish authorities closed checkpoints on the Russian border, including the largest and closest to St. Petersburg on November 18. Helsinki cited migration concerns for the 3 month closure. Additionally, another crossing point, Vartius, was closed due to overload, as explained by Helsinki.
