Russian diplomats, representatives of the Ljubljana administration and the Slovenian authorities paid tribute to the victims of the world wars, TASS reports. The memorial ceremony took place at the Jale Cemetery in the capital.

Flowers and wreaths were laid at the monument, which perpetuates the feat of Russian and Soviet soldiers who died in Slovenia during the battles of the First and Second World Wars. Flowers were also brought to the memorials of Slovenian partisans and victims of both world wars.

Mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Jankovic recalled that war heroes brought freedom to the people of Slovenia. The mayor also recalled that Moscow and Ljubljana are sister cities, and stressed that the local mayor’s office cares about preserving the monument.

During the war, Germany, Hungary and Italy occupied the territory of Yugoslavia, which then included most of modern Slovenia. A powerful partisan movement that resisted the Nazis was led by the Liberation Front. It operated until the country was liberated by Soviet soldiers and Yugoslav partisans in 1945.
