Russophobia in the Baltic countries, supported and provoked by the state authorities, has received legal formalization, said Vladimir Andreev, deputy head of the department for work with compatriots abroad of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to Andreev, such a conclusion can be drawn based on the criminal prosecution which inhabitants of the Baltic States face for expressing sympathy for Russia. Criminal prosecution was started against participants in memorial events during Russian holidays. The diplomat noted that only some of the detainees were able to ''miraculously'' escape imprisonment.

The representative of the Russian MFA also criticized the systematic crimes committed in the Baltic States against Soviet monuments, and other facts of the fight against history.

Andreev stressed that in today's Baltic countries, one could be under the threat of prosecution for speaking in support of Russia and expressing sympathy for the country. The diplomat called this a terrible phenomenon and "Russophobia in legal form."
