The detention of former Sputnik Media editor Allan Huntsom, a citizen of Estonia, is a settling of scores with the independent activist and an attempt by Tallinn to "show off to its Western curators," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. The commentary is posted on the ministry's website.

Earlier the journalist was detained by Estonian security police and subsequently arrested for two months on the same day. “According to available data, he is charged with ‘intelligence activities against Estonia’ and ‘maintaining ties with Russia,’” Zakharova stated.

Zakharova criticized the Estonian authorities, labeling the detention as a cynical move. She argued that, under the guise of national security concerns, Estonian officials are targeting independent activists advocating for constructive relations with Russia. According to Zakharova, the Estonian authorities' crackdown on alternative viewpoints and promotion of Russophobia is motivated by their eagerness to please their Western allies.
